"The only true equalisers in the world are books; the only treasure-house open to all comers is a library; the only wealth which will not decay is knowledge; the only jewel which you can carry beyond the grave is wisdom."
- J. A. Langford, The Praise of Books (1880)

Main Room Lisgar Library

The Lisgar Library offers a wide range of print (including approximately 10 000 books) and electronic resources to encourage reading and promote the development of research skills. In September, grade nine students will visit the library for an orientation session. Instruction related to locating, selecting, evaluating and communicating information will be offered to all students throughout the school year. Students are encouraged to conference with Mr. Grose, the teacher-librarian, for major projects and summative assignments. Both he and Ms. McCoy, the Library Technician, can be consulted for assistance in locating information in the Lisgar Library. The Lisgar Library is usually open from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm.

The computer-classroom area of the library provides students with access to the Internet and on-line databases. Chat-lines, games, and other inappropriate sites must not be accessed from within the school. The computers are intended for use in completing school work. Designated computers provide access to Alexandria, the on-line catalogue of the library's collection. To assist students in properly documenting sources of information, the Lisgar Style Book is available in the library and on-line. Through Knowledge Ontario and the Ministry of Education, students have free access to extensive, authoritative reference, periodical and newspaper databases in both English and French. Information on these databases and other on-line resources is available through the library website at http://lisgar.ca/library.php. Students can obtain passwords at the circulation desk to be able to access most of these resources from home computers. A coin operated printer/photocopier is available for students who need to print work at school. The cost of printing and photocopying is 5 cents per page. Students should not bring food or drinks into the library (water in a transparent container is the exception) and they will lose their library privileges for the day if supervisors find them breaking this rule.

Remember, your student card is also your Lisgar Library card. Books are normally loaned for a 3 week period; however, extensions can usually be accommodated if requested in advance at the circulation desk. The fine for each overdue book is 25 cents per school day. Reference books such as encyclopedia, are only for use in the library. Such books have call numbers beginning with REF and most of them have yellow labels with a bold black R on the spine.

Students are encouraged to obtain a public library card to be able to access the Ottawa Public Library's extensive electronic databases and print resources. Senior students should use their public library membership to obtain "The Capital Sm@rtLibrary card" which lets individuals 16 years of age or older borrow books from the University of Ottawa Library and Carleton University Library.

Become involved with the Lisgar Library. Students who are interested in volunteering in the library should apply at the circulation desk. Your recommendations for new book titles are welcomed. Let us know how we can help.
